Scoil Mhuire has a long tradition of teaching German as a Modern Foreign Language . The Senior Cycle and M.F.L programmes at Junior Cycle level embrace every linguistic and cultural aspect of the language.
German is a wonderfully rich language, which is spoken by over a 100 million people-the most widely-spoken mother tongue in Europe. It is one of the key languages for the worlds of science, technology, philosophy, music and more.
Within the Department, we aim to allow pupils discover the language for its own sake, but also as a portal to the broad cultural heritage that goes with it: a fascinating array of music, literature and film, which in turn allows us to explore the present-day societies of German –speaking countries. Pupils are encouraged to travel to Germany, Switzerland or Austria, and to avail of languages courses to hone their language skills, enjoy the vibrant culture and to further personal endeavour.
